JEPPE HEIN

Cage and Mirror

In Jeppe Hein’s Cage and Mirror, you step into a large, elegant cage of curved steel bars. Inside the cage hangs a mirror in which you can look at your body, other people and the surroundings as the mirror rotates in the wind. The surroundings turn around your body at various speeds depending on the wind conditions; as dizzying passing glimpses or slowly and steadily. Instead of shutting you in, the cage sets your gaze free and gives you a changeable and fragmented experience of your own presence in the landscape around you.

About Jeppe Hein

The playing and participation in the work is the focal point for Jeppe Hein. He works in a cross field between sculpture, architecture, installation and design. With simple shapes and surprising media, he stimulates you as you enter an installation or experience a sculpture. A fountain that turns on and off around you. A ball that follows you as you walk around. Or a bench, which by its shape creates new ways of sitting, lying, meeting others or seeing and being seen.

Born in 1974 in Silkeborg.

Lives and works in Berlin.

Trained as a carpenter in Silkeborg.

Former assistant to the Danish/Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.

Graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Städel Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt.

Opened Karrierebar in 2007 together with his sister Lærke Hein.

Won ARKEN’s art prize in 2014.
