COMING UP: BARON ROSENKRANTZ – THE WONDER OF COLOUR

Luminous angels, majestic sphinxes and bestial figures appear before us, arrayed in the seven spectral colours of the rainbow. This prolifically imaginative, colourful imagery has been conjured up by Danish artist Arild Rosenkrantz. In Denmark, he was and remains something of an alien figure, and his name is far less recognized than those of fellow contemporary artists such as J.F. Willumsen or L.A. Ring. This October, a major exhibition will remedy matters somewhat, shedding new light on this overlooked artist and his fascinating life’s work.

Baron Arild Rosenkrantz

An eccentric colourist. A restless soul. An unconventional baron. Arild Rosenkrantz was all these things – and much more – but first and foremost he was an uncompromising and curious artist. Born in Denmark, Arild Rosenkrantz spent most of his life abroad, winning great acclaim there with works inspired by Italian, French and English art traditions. At the tender age of twenty, he exhibited his mythical and religious scenes at the Symbolist salon Salon de la Rose + Croix in Paris. Later, he learned the craft of stained-glass art in the United States, creating harmonious and spectacularly colourful stained-glass panes that tied in with the English Arts and Crafts movement.

The exhibition at ARKEN will showcase the sheer versatility of Arild Rosenkrantz’s art, presenting paintings and pastels, embroidery and illustrations as well as 1:1 sketches of his brilliant stained-glass panes. The exhibition will place particular emphasis on the paintings imbued with explosive light and colourful misty veils that Arild Rosenkrantz created after meeting Rudolf Steiner. Rudolf Steiner introduced Arild Rosenkrantz to Goethe’s colour theory and the inherent properties of colours – an encounter that would have a major impact on the artist’s mode of expression.

Baron Rosenkrantz – The Wonder of Colour will feature works from the collection at Rosenholm Castle in Djursland, where Arild Rosenkrantz spent much of his old age. The Rosenholm collection will be complemented by works from private collections that have never before been displayed in public as well as photographs, letters and archival material. The resulting exhibition will – for the first time ever – shed light on the artist’s multifaceted practice, his spiritual quest and not least his pursuit of light and colour.
